Starting in 2006, Gordon Wells has been recording residents in his home community in Uist in the Outer Hebrides as they speak about their experiences, both in Gaelic and English. Since then, Guthan nan Eilean (Island Voices) as a community project has aimed to collect slices of life and work from Gaelic speakers in the Hebrides, and is primarily used for language learners. The recordings are wonderful examples of everyday spoken language, as people describe their lives in their own words.
The Guthan nan Eilean website also provides a home for recordings of Breton, Manx and Irish speakers amongst many other languages. It is our pleasure to now make the Gaelic videos available as part of Cluas ri Claisneachd, complete with subtitles, so that language learners and fluent speakers alike may further benefit from this fantastic resource. Our thanks go to all the contributors, fieldworker Gordon Wells and to Sabhal Mòr Ostaig for allowing us to use the videos made, and we are delighted to be introducing video material to the archive. Appropriate permissions have been gathered from the fieldworkers who made these recordings to make them freely available online to the public. In making material available online DASG acts in good faith that our content has significant value and will contribute to the further study of the Gaelic language, linguistics and history. We do however recognise that from time to time material may be published that contains personal data or includes content that may be regarded as obscene or defamatory. If you find material on our website for which you have not given permission, or which contravenes privacy laws, is obscene / defamatory or is not covered by a limitation or exception, please contact us here. Upon receipt of a valid complaint the material will be temporarily removed from the DASG website pending an agreed solution.
